Spotlight: Introduction to Hurricane Honey

Written by Amal Murni & a collaboration with Hurricane Honey

Kepala Seni has reached out to the men behind what we would define as a desert rock-band that is Hurricane Honey that paves their way into Brunei's music scene and hopefully internationally with their ever-sweet, gut wrenching and dirty sound that is reminiscent of the well-known Godfather of desert rock, Queens of The Stone Age.

The band was kind enough to give us a feedback to give not only the readers, but the team more information on knowing them entirely. We would like to tip our hats to the band for the collaboration and to our readers, please don't miss out on them!

Backstory

Hurricane Honey was born from a musical crossroads that may not have existed if 3 of the band's members Nol, Aya and Spawai did not play in a band together in the previous guise of indie rock band ‘I Mean The Snakes’. Looking for a new direction, they set out to purposefully pave a new way for their music. Thus Hurricane Honey was born in 2017. The quintet was completed by former bassist of Airholes, Midi and former drummer of Mota, Izzat. Nol the lead singer / guitarist, has been in metal, hardcore punk and indie rock bands from London to Brunei, having spent most of his life in the UK but settling in Brunei recently. He quotes Scott Weiland as being his main singing influence and Hendrix where his 4 fingers flow to.

Scott Weiland and Jimi Hendrix

Aya (guitarist) has played in many grunge bands in Brunei since the 90s , joining IMTS in the mid 2000’s with Nol and Spawai. His taste for an awesome rendition of the 'November Rain' solo can be heard on late soirées. Spawai, guitarist and machine ,although it’s very hard to tell the man apart from the machine, joined the above in the mid 2000s. A powerhouse of the band , Spawai Don’s an awesomely  styled Alex turner-esque rockabilly haircut which doesn’t even get messed up when he owns the stage.

Midi is a consummate professional and an all round solid personality and we’re lucky to have that translate into his awesome bass shenanigans. Last but not least, We have Izzat the Kid of the band .They say young blood has the most energy , well that is true and then some. Izzat is a very unique drummer because he can play anything from pop to metal very well and that suits this band very well because... we are everything in between.

When these 5 characters combine together on a record and on stage it creates something sweet and disastrous . I guess that’s why they’re called Hurricane Honey.

Current Activities

To date they have released a 3 song EP .

Singles releases are "Kaiju" and "Mosquito bites" which they won a competition to shoot the Music Video for the latter mentioned song. These songs can be found at all major music streaming services such as iTunes, Apple music, Deezer, Spotify and many more.

They’ve gigged in Malaysia extensively and have recently done a gig in Bangkok which went down a storm.

At the moment Hurricane Honey are in the studio cutting tracks for a full length LP / Album which will be released sometime in 2019. Keep your ears and eyes peeled for the album which is yet untitled .

The works on this album is accumulative of all of their influences . The sound of Hurricane Honey can be described as the genre of Desert Rock ranging from influences of Queens of the Stone Age ,Royal Blood and Stone Temple Pilots.
