Fred Perry Subculture Live 2018

By ssbdn

What goes hand in hand with music? Fashion. And what better way to pair it with than a live gig.

Fred Perry Malaysia has returned with their annual celebration of the brand’s long-standing relationship with music and street culture. The Fred Perry Subculture Live gig series was held not only in Kuala Lumpur, but Jakarta and Manila as well around October-November of 2018. The best part is, THE VACCINES curated the DJ set playlist with Freddie Cowan behind the turntables in all 3 cities!

The Fred Perry Subculture Malaysia Live 2018 was held at Visions Studio in Bangsar, Malaysia. A mural of 30 artists endorsed by the brand including Luna Dira, Midnight Fusic and Bittersweet performed on that momentous night with a portrait, a simple bio and also a Spotify playlist on Fred Perry Subculture’s Spotify profile!

Furthermore, The Fred Perry Subculture scene has endorsed bands and solo musicians in the likes of No Doubt, Bastille, Miles Kane to even Dua Lipa who was featured in their Subculture gig in 2016 when she was still a rising star in the UK. Considering that it is quite known to many on both music and fashion, being endorsed by Fred Perry is a huge honorary. Fred Perry is a very significant brand in the music industry especially to skinheads, skankers, and basically everyone despite the founder’s profession; tennis. I would probably trade my kidneys for cash to fit myself in one of those iconic Fred Perry shirt and collect some or get it customised with my SS initial. Its rude-boy / girl look can easily suit anyone. I have been following this brand since I was 15 and it amazes me how Fred Perry can embellish itself at the bottom of my heart unlike any other.

The legacy continues as a community or in their case, a “subculture” which emphasises on music. On most cases, if not all, through their marketing technique of collaborations and endorsements with musicians worldwide, they have successfully left a fashionable footprint on everyone’s subconscious. More importantly, they also provide a platform for an artist to be seen or heard and that is what matters -- being able to support musicians, especially the underground scene and giving them the exposure they deserve.

Writer’s note: I must be in the clouds thinking one day a band or an artist in Brunei can break through this imaginary wall that Trump should already buy from us by now, but I believe that would not happen easily without the support of everyone. Heck, I am pinpointing to those who criticise before even thinking thoroughly on how it is and what it is like, before asking those who have experienced it firsthand. Want to find a way to support the local music scene? You can contribute to our local music scene by requesting more… how should I put this... well-deserved local music (it is still subjective) and keep on seeking because there is a lot that have yet to be discovered! Want to know more about them before the Bruneian habit comes out? Don’t worry, we are here to give some sort of ‘guidance’ and ease the hardships of digging through their digital albums/ EPs, soundcloud and other social media accounts, so stay tuned! You will be a ton of help for us too, more than you would know!
